How to Use Screen Time in Mac?
Aug 24, 2019 Apple introduced Screen Time in iPhone with the release of iOS 12. It helps to monitor your activities on phone and control the online behavior. Good news is that the same Screen Time function is available in macOS version 10.15 or macOS Catalina. Oct 18, 2019 Screen Time was also added to macOS Catalina, with the same features. However, it doesn’t seem to work correctly. Rather than showing which apps are frontmost when you work, it shows how long apps are open: I keep a number of apps open all the time: Mail, Messages, Fantastical, Omni Focus, Music, and a few others. So counting them as actual. Screen Time has now made its way to macOS with macOS Catalina, allowing Mac users to perform the same function on their laptops and desktops. Screen Time offers the ability to track device usage on a per-app basis, which can be very helpful if you want to know which application you’re spending the most time on. Jul 02, 2019 Screen time on macOS Open System Preferences and select the Screen Time preference. Click Continue on the first screen you see. Click Options at the very bottom of the column on the left, and in the pane on the right, click ‘Turn On’.
With macOS Catalina, you can setup Screen Time on Mac and share the online time across your devices. This is useful for the people continuously spending time on multiple devices using the same Apple ID to track the entire online time on all devices.

Enable this checkbox, if you want to combine the Screen Time settings on other devices like iPhone and iPad. You should have logged into the same Apple ID on all devices in order to use this service.
If you have already enabled Screen Time on iPhone, then the moment you click the checkbox, all your iPhone restrictions will be applied to your Mac also. You will get notifications in case if you have reached the restrictions.
Screen Time Passcode
Enable this option to setup a passcode to modify Screen Time settings on your Mac. You will see you a warning, when you enable this option on an administrator account. Apple recommends not to setup a password for admin account.
Remember, this option will be automatically enabled when you have passcode on iOS device and selected the previous “Share Across Devices” option.
Screen Time Settings on Mac
When you enable share across devices option, all your previous iOS settings will be automatically applied to your Mac. You can navigate through the sidebar options to view the report and update settings. You can also filter the usage based on individual device or view the usage together on all devices.
App Usage
After enabling Screen Time, this section will show the usage of your devices. Hover over the apps to see the hourglass and info icons.
Click on the info icon to see the category and rating for the selected app. Click on the hourglass to setup a new app limit for the selected app. You can limit the app usage on daily basis by setting up time with “Every Day” option. Downtime
We strongly recommend you to setup a “Downtime” option to safeguard your sleeping time without devices. For example, you can setup the downtime as 11PM to 6AM so that you will not be able to use the device during this time except for calls. This is also helpful in restricting your kids to avoid looking at the device during night time.
You will get a downtime reminder 5 minutes before the starting time.

- Restrict internet access from Siri and disable using explicit words.
- Disable music profiles and posts.
- Disable multiplayer games and adding friends in Game Center.
Stores Settings
Here you can setup what type of apps are allowed in the App Store based on rating and country. However, you can’t stop in-app purchases like iOS App Store.
Apps Restriction
As of now, you can’t disable the default apps like Safari on your Mac. This is a biggest challenge for parental control to restrict the internet access. Screen Time finally allows you to disable the default Apple apps like Safari, Camera, FaceTime, etc. You can simply select the checkbox under “Apps” tab to deny access to the selected apps.
Other Restrictions
This section basically allows you to enable or disable changes to the privacy based settings. For example, you can disable changes to account changes on your Mac under this section.

Apple is working on bringing the Mac and iOS closer together with the introduction of macOS 10.15 and iOS 13. Siri Shortcuts, Screen Time, and more are expected to be unveiled for Mac during its Worldwide Developers conference in June.
According to people familiar with the development of macOS 10.15 – which has been in the works for at least two years – the new version will include support for Siri Shortcuts, a feature introduced in iOS 12 which allows users to create custom voice shortcuts for actions that can be done in apps.
It’s also likely that the Shortcuts app – a result from the acquisition of Workflow – will be available on macOS, the inclusion of system-wide support for Siri Shortcuts on macOS 10.15 strongly suggests it. On iOS, the Shortcuts app is not bundled with the system, users have to download it from the App Store. It’s possible that the same will be true for macOS: users will download a Marzipan version of Shortcuts from the Mac App Store.
Supporting the feature on macOS is important so developers of iPad apps can more easily port their Shortcuts-enabled apps to the Mac, with the new SDK becoming available at WWDC. According to sources, only Marzipan apps will be able to take advantage of the Shortcuts support on macOS. Engineers are also working on bringing the assistant on macOS closer to its iOS counterpart by porting over features such as the ability to set timers and alarms and ask about air quality, currently unavailable on the Mac.
Another major feature from iOS 12 that’s coming to the Mac with macOS 10.15 is Screen Time. The feature allows users to see how much time they’re spending in apps and to limit the amount of time that can be spent in a specific app or category of apps, such as social media. Parents can also use Screen Time to set time limits for their children.
Screen Time on the Mac will work just like it does on iOS. There will be a new panel in System Preferences to configure the feature. When the time limit for an app has been exceeded, an overlay will be shown, allowing the user to either close the app or unlock the app with a passcode.

Apple is also working on bringing a new Apple ID management panel to System Preferences, including better support for configuring Family Sharing, similar to what’s currently available in the iOS Settings app. Yet another feature from iOS that’s coming to the Mac with macOS 10.15 are the iMessage effects such as confetti, lasers, fireworks and others.
macOS 10.15 should be announced during WWDC which starts on June 3rd, released as a beta for developers the same day. The final version for consumers should be available in late September or October.
